On line investing advocates claim the process is easy. In a rising market much money has been made without needing to know anything. Advise from a broker was not necessary. My broker ( who happens to be my son) had several of his clients leave for places where they traded shares at lower costs. Several went heavily into tech stocks. Whenthe bottom of that market fell out some lost as high as 50% of the value of their portfolio. One doesn’t consult a foot doctor when he has a heart problem.

Because of market conditions many experts were expecting people to abandon online investing, and while it’s true that some day traders leave, many more long-range investors keep coming online to take their place. Showing steady growth, the baseline of U.S. Internet users investing online is growing at > 10 million/year. They don’t come and go with market fluctuations. They are aging and have more money available for investment. They are coming online because they want greater control of their investments and the direction of their retirement plans. In addition, they are more comfortable with all forms of Internet commerce. These factors will contribute to increased stability and continued growth in the online investing sector.

The growing reliance on social networking tools among online investors is another major trend. Blog readership & blog authorship are growing at a rapid clip quarter to quarter. Investors experience tremendous value from being able to share ideas, ask questions and swap success stories with other like-minded investors – all for free, and validate what they hear before acting.
